On the same day that Doctor Who turned 60, David Tennant was in attendance at the Rolling Stone UK Awards in collaboration with Rémy Martin last night to pick up the Television Award for the iconic series.
The actor, who is returning to play the Time Lord in the show’s 50th anniversary specials, paid tribute to the show for changing his life as he accepted the award last night.
“The first episode of Doctor Who was transmitted on the BBC exactly 60 years ago today,” said Tennant.
“So that makes this Doctor Who‘s Diamond Jubilee. Which makes *this* award a very jolly birthday present. It’s one of the great honours of my life to have been just a small part of this amazing show that so many people have grown up loving. I certainly did, I was three when Jon Pertwee turned into Tom Baker and I remember it vividly.
“It’s an extraordinary show and it’s also done so many things for me throughout my life. Rather unexpectedly, if you knew me as an eight year old with cellotape around my glasses and a pudding bowl haircut, now as I stand here holding a Rolling Stone UK award, Doctor Who has given me cool! So I’m very grateful for that.”
He added: “And we are back! This Saturday night, 6.30, 60 years and still going strong. Doctor Who is back! Please tune in. It’s also on the iPlayer! At a moment like this in the world, I’m glad we’re celebrating a show that is about someone travelling around time and space in a wooden box dispensing kindness. It’s a character who travels through time and space cherishing the unusual and standing up for the disenfranchised. May the spirit of the TARDIS carry us through the next sixty years. Thank you Rolling Stone UK!”
