‘Peaky Blinders’ creator is ‘nearly done’ with writing film
After the TV series concluded this year, Steven Knight says filming for the movie will begin in 2023
Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has revealed that he is “nearly done” with writing the forthcoming film based on the TV series.
The long-running show aired its final season earlier this year, with Knight confirming prior to its release that a feature-length film would follow.
Speaking this week on the Heart Breakfast radio show with Jamie Theakston and Zoe Hardman, Knight revealed that the script was almost finished, and that plans to film in 2023 are still on schedule.
“Yes, I’m writing it right now,” Knight told Theakston and Hardman. “I’m nearly done writing it, and we’re going to shoot it… I’m setting up some film and television studios in Digbeth in Birmingham.”
“We’re going to shoot it at the studios in Digbeth, and on location in Digbeth in Birmingham,” he revealed. “Digbeth and Small Heath is where the Peaky Blinders actually roamed. So it’s like Peaky’s coming home basically.”
As well as all the old favourites from the show, Knight also teased that the film would introduce “some new faces that will hopefully be quite surprising.”
Back in October of 2021, Knight confirmed that shooting for the film would take place in 2023, and that the project would represent the end of the road for Peaky Blinders as we know it.”
Elsewhere in the Peaky Blinders universe, a new theatrical adaptation of the TV show is set to premiere later this year.
Peaky Blinders: The Redemption of Thomas Shelby has been adapted for the stage by Knight after he teamed up with the Rambert dance company.
Rambert’s artistic director Benoit Swan Pouffer says the “uplifting and inspiring” show will offer a fresh take on Tommy Shelby’s story in a post-World War One Birmingham.
The show is set to debut at Birmingham Hippodrome on 27 September, with subsequent London dates at Wembley’s Troubadour Theatre expected to follow before a wider UK tour in 2023.
