Taylor Swift announces new album ‘Midnights’ at VMAs
"This is a collection of music written in the middle of the night, a journey through terrors and sweet dreams," the singer shared in an album statement
Taylor Swift has announced she is releasing a new album called Midnights in October.
The US pop megastar won three awards at last night’s (28 August) MTV VMAs at the Prudential Centre in Newark, New Jersey, including Best Longform Video, Video Of The Year and Best Direction for ‘All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version)’.
While collecting the award for Video of the Year, the star made the announcement on stage. “My brand new album comes out October 21,” she said. “I will tell you more at midnight.”
She followed up with the album art and a statement, which crashed Swift’s official website.
“We lie awake in love and in fear, in turmoil and in tears. We stare at walls and drink until they speak back,” the statement read. “We twist in our self-made cages and pray that we aren’t – right this minute – about to make some fateful life-altering mistake.
“This is a collection of music written in the middle of the night, a journey through terrors and sweet dreams. The floors we pace and the demons we face. For all of us who have tossed and turned and decided to keep the lanterns lit and go searching – hoping that just maybe, when the clock strikes twelve… we’ll meet ourselves.
“Midnights, the stories of 13 sleepless nights scattered throughout my life, will be out 21 October. Meet me at midnight.”
Midnights will feature 13 songs, split into an A and B side, but no titles have been revealed yet. The album can be pre-ordered here.
Swift made history as the first artist to win Video of the Year three times, and is also the first artist to win the award for a video directed without a collaborator. ‘All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version)’ is also the longest music video ever to win in the category.
Elsewhere in her speech, the singer said she was “so proud” of “what we have made”.
“I know that every second of this moment that we wouldn’t have been able to make this short film if it weren’t for you, the fans,” she said.
“Because I wouldn’t be able to re-record my album [Red (Taylor’s Version)] if it weren’t for you. You emboldened me to do that.”
