When it comes to his music, Chinese singer and songwriter Kun likes to mix the classics with the modern. Drawing inspiration from plenty of historic icons of British music, he often infuses synths and elements of R&B, pop and EDM to modernise his rocky sound, switching up genres from song to song. His latest song ‘Remedy’ has softened his sound, with a ballad that’s stripped down to only his emotionally charged vocals and melancholy cascading piano that would not be out of place as the tear-jerker slot on an Adele album.

His ART LAB performance video for the track has a cinematic, old Hollywood feel, which has the similar silver screen cinematic quality to one of his favourite artists, Lana Del Rey. Earlier in the year, Kun was announced as a global ambassador for Versace, and his song ‘Afterglow’ was made in collaboration with the brand. The simmering futuristic cyberpunk electronic track featured in Versace’s campaign for their Mercury Sneakers. With his two great loves being music and fashion, Kun chatted to us about working with Versace on the track, as well as his love of British music greats.

Are there any British artists you love that are on your current playlist?

I’m really into artists like Queen, The Beatles, Radiohead and Harry Styles. Their music resonates with me a lot.

You have an eclectic music style. How would you describe your current sound?

My current sound is a blend of the old and the new and I’m really trying to make it my own. I’m mixing vintage, old-school sounds with new-age rock, pop, and soul sensibilities. It’s a reflection of my journey. I want to create timeless, dynamic, and atmospheric music for listeners to relax and vibe to.

What music are you looking to explore in the future?

In the future, I’m interested in exploring more experimental modern classic music and perhaps blending it with elements of another type of music like indie pop/ alternative rock to create a more unique and fusion style. Different genre allows me to convey specific emotions and experiences, creating a diverse and meaningful musical journey.

Are there any artists you would like to collaborate with, and why?

Oh, I do have a lot of international singers that I like. A dream collaboration would be to work with Queen. Their music is so influential to me and Freddie Mercury was an absolute idol of mine. I also really admire Lana Del Rey. Her unique musical style and approach to each project is so inspiring.

If there was one song you would love to cover, what would it be and why?

Man, there are just so many great songs out there. If I really had to pick one, I guess it would be from Queen. It’s really timeless and resonates deeply with me. We Will Rock You, Another One Bites The Dust? Like, come on, classics.

What’s next for you, musically?

In my music journey, I’m excited to experiment with live performances and create visually wonderful music videos. I also hope to engage more with fans through interactive content and explore international collaborations to expand my artistic horizons. And creating original music would be my priority. I strive to bring new and compelling songs that connect with audiences on a deeper level and I wish I can continue to evolve creatively in my musical journey.

How did your collaboration with Versace come about?

I’ve always been inspired by Versace‘s innovative designs, which resonate with my artistic vision. Working with Versace felt destined to happen as it allows me to blend fashion and music in a way that celebrates both forms of creative expression, creating something truly unique in the process.

How was shooting the campaign video? How did it differ from doing one of your own music videos?

Shooting the campaign video for Versace was a thrilling experience. It allowed me to express a different, more cinematic side of myself and my music.‘Afterglow’is the product of the hard work, dedication, and outside-the-box way of thinking that Versace had provided us.

How does it feel to be part of the Versace family?

Being part of Versace, an iconic brand with such a rich history of innovation and luxury is incredibly inspiring. It motivates me to continue pushing boundaries both in music and fashion.

You have always had an interest in fashion. Did you have any early fashion or style inspirations?

I’ve been fascinated by fashion and the strength it holds since I was young. Growing up, I drew inspiration from vintage Hong Kong-style blends, which you can see in my early album  ‘迷’(Mi)  Internationally, I drew inspiration from David Bowie, merging bold colours, unique textures, and multiple cultural influences as well.

Are there any British brands/designers or trends you like?

I’m particularly drawn to British fashion trends that blend sophistication with a touch of rebellion. I admire the way British designers effortlessly mix traditional tailoring with contemporary streetwear influences. British fashion trends often embody a sense of individuality and self-expression.

Is there anyone in the music world whose fashion you love?

I admire artists who use fashion as a form of artistic expression and storytelling. I also appreciate vintage styles from musicians like David Bowie, Prince, and Elvis Presley. Their iconic looks from past decades still inspire fashion trends even today. No doubt it’s all timeless.
