Sam Fender has released the music video for his latest track, ‘Spit Of You’, which stars Stephen Graham.
The emotional clip shows the difficult relationship between Fender and his fictional father, played by Stephen Graham, juxtaposing with happier memories.
In the video, Fender and Graham move through a series of memories, including a trip to the pub to play pool, and a camping trip. Their complicated relationship appears against a backdrop of poignant lyrics from the current Rolling Stone UK cover star: “I can talk to anyone/ I can’t talk to you”.
It’s a fitting visual for a single on which Fender explores the relationship between fathers and sons.
He recently explained the inspiration behind the song, describing it as “based around my own relationship with my old man, and how we both struggle as blokes to communicate the way we feel to each other without it becoming a stand off.”
“It’s about how the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, as I get further into my twenties I see so much of myself in him, especially when it comes to being stubborn.”
He added: “The second half of the song talks about seeing him with my grandma when she passed away, and how I saw him as a son, and how that moment reminded me to make the most of my time with him. If anything, it’s a declaration of love for him.”
The clip was directed by Philip Barantini (‘Chernobyl’, ‘Humans’, ‘Band of Brothers’), who has worked with Graham on the short film ‘Boiling Point’, which is due to premiere at BFI London Film Festival this month.
Graham has also appeared in music videos for bands such as Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds (‘Wandering Star’) and Arctic Monkeys (‘Fluorescent Adolescent’).
“Stephen Graham is genuinely one of the best actors this country has ever seen, and such a lovely bloke,” Fender said. “I’m fucking so buzzing about it, it’s so beast!”
‘Spit Of You’ is the latest preview of Fender’s eagerly anticipated upcoming album, ‘Seventeen Going Under’, which arrives this Friday (Oct. 8).
Elsewhere, Fender’s Rolling Stone UK cover interview saw him discussing inequalities within the music industry, calling for working-class musicians to be given a fairer shot at success.
