JayO has shared ‘Back’, the latest track to arrive from the rising London star. You can watch the video first on Rolling Stone UK.
The latest effort from the singer and producer comes after he performed at Stormzy’s This Is What We Mean day in Victoria Park.
The track, a sultry Afrobeats banger, was recorded after the 24-year-old North Londoner headed to Ghana with producer Rz earlier this summer, resulting in what he describes as “a song about wanting an intimate time with someone and them playing hard to get.”
“My producer (Rz) and I isolated ourselves whilst we were away in Ghana earlier this year. We hadn’t made music since we’d been there so we decided to cook something up on our last night. At the top of the mountains we wanted to create a feeling that felt like a composition but with a mixture of Afro and R&B,” he explains.
While previous releases have included the sulking debut single ‘XO’ and its piano-driven follow-up ’22’, JayO says his sound is hard to pinpoint.
““I feel like I’m just at the beginning of my journey,” he explains.
Additionally, family parties spent listening to Afrobeats and old school R&B have also informed his sound.
“That feel-good music that you can still hit play on at a party even forty years later? For me, my music is an interpretation of that feeling…I make music that makes people feel good,” he says.
Expect to hear a lot more from JayO in the coming months and years.
