The Cribs unearth latest “lost” single ‘Things Could Be Better’
The Cribs have shared another A/B side, 'Things Could Be Better'/'Yellow Venus' as part of their Sonic Blew Singles Club
The Cribs have shared ‘Things Could Be Better’ and its B-Side ‘Yellow Venus’. The A/B release is the fourth iteration of the band’s Sonic Blew Singles Club, which shares a new pair of unheard singles on 7″ each month.
Since September, The Cribs have delivered a slew of new and “lost” singles, including ‘Swinging At Shadows’ in September and October’s ‘The Day I Got Lost Again’. Today’s release follows the Sonic Blew tradition of excavating a “lost” recording on its A-side and attaching a B-side recorded during lockdown.
Originally written around the time of ‘In The Belly Of The Brazen Bull’ sessions, today’s A-side ‘Things Could Get Better’ was originally abandoned because of personal reasons.
“Unfortunately, around that time a friend of ours was involved in an accident and ended up in the ICU, and so I shelved the song indefinitely due to the sad memories that became attached to it,” Gary Jarman said.
“Despite spending over a decade gathering dust, I am really proud of how this song eventually came into being. It’s pretty special,” Ryan said of the song, which is a half-time lilt complete with dreamy backing vocals.
Just last month, The Cribs dropped ‘Sucked Sweet’/’Bad Dream’, the former of which was supposed to be the 13th track on 2020 album ‘Night Network’.
On the revival of ‘Things Could Be Better’, Gary noted that: “on the last day of the “Night Network” sessions in LA, Ross insisted that we bring the song back and try recording it last minute before leaving the studio.”
He continued, saying: “I was pretty reluctant, but he eventually talked me around. Then, Ryan stepped in and took responsibility for writing the lyrics and singing the lead – and turned it into something way better than I ever could’ve imagined.”
