Sam Fender has been forced to postpone the final details of his UK arena tour after sustaining damage to his vocal cords.
The Tyneside star was set to play a second show at Glasgow’s OVO Hydro tonight (December 17), before a final homecoming show at Newcastle’s Utilita Arena on Friday (December 20 to promote his upcoming third album, People Watching.
In a statement, the singer said that both of the dates will now be postponed after haemorrhaging his right vocal cord.
Explaining that he was “absolutely heartbroken,” Fender said in a statement: “This has been the best tour so far and all I want to do is get up and sing again for you all tonight.”
Fender explained that he had been suffering with the flu and discovered the damage after examination from a ear, nose and throat (ENT) team.
“I’ve had two separate ENT doctors say if I perform tonight I’m risking lasting damage to my voice and I have been advised to be on vocal rest and not use my voice for a prolonged length of time until it heals. I’ve done everything by the book this tour living like a monk, it’s so unlucky,” he added.
Fender confirmed that both shows will be rescheduled, with “more news soon”.
In a five-star review of his show at London’s O2 Arena last week, Rolling Stone UK wrote: “What’s clear from tonight is that Fender is capable of slaying the biggest of stages with – to borrow an image from one of his heroes – all the ease of Paul Gascoigne gliding through an opposition defence. Now it’s over to you, Emily Eavis.”
