The Metropolitan Police have confirmed they will make a decision about Taylor Swift’s upcoming run of shows at Wembley Stadium in the immediate wake of a foiled terror threat at her Vienna gigs.
A 19-year-old has confessed to planning an attack at Swift’s gigs in the Austrian capitals, which were scheduled to take place tonight (Thursday, August 8) Friday (9) and Saturday (10), before being cancelled due to safety concerns arising from the foiled threat. A second man was also arrested.
Swift will return to London next week for five more shows, but UK police are now said to be debating whether the dates are safe to go ahead.
“Clearly the police will be looking at all the intelligence and making decisions,” Home Office minister Dame Diana Johnson told LBC . “They risk assess every event that happens in this country.”
The gigs, which kick off next Wednesday, will see the singer supported by Paramore, Raye, Holly Humberstone, Suki Waterhouse and Paramore.
Local reports from Austria say that the suspect had stolen the chemicals from his workplace and had built a bomb. It is also claimed that the teenager had planned to drive a car into the crowd outside the Ernst Happel Stadium, and had considered using machetes and knives.
Franz Ruf, the public security director at Austria’s interior ministry, said the main suspect is believed to have been radicalised online. According to The Standard, he had also sworn an online oath of allegiance to Islamic State.
Swift is yet to comment on the Vienna shows or confirm any update on the London gigs.
