Nell Mescal has shared ‘Punchline’, the latest track to emerge from the rising Irish star. You can check it out in full below.

Mescal‘s latest track sees her pairing Americana-tinged indie against emotive lyrics as she dissects the end of a friendship.

“I wrote ‘Punchline’ in my bedroom last year about a friendship ending before it needed to and the heartbreak that comes with it,” Nell explained.

“It’s about trying to ‘win’ the friendship breakup by pretending it doesn’t hurt you that much, but still having that sick feeling you get in your stomach because you miss the other person”.

The latest track follows on from ‘In My Head’, the third track from the Maynooth singer-songwriter.

Mescal, the younger sister of Oscar-nominated Aftersun star Paul, is also gearing up for her debut tour later this year. You can see her full dates below. Speaking to Rolling Stone UK for our February/March issue, she discussed using her brother as a sounding board for ideas during her writing process. “We’re both too similar, we’ll have exactly the same ideas and when I think it’s not great, I always think he’ll have the same reaction as me, which is daunting!” she said.

She also addressed the effect of Paul’s burgeoning Hollywood profile on her own nascent career. “I’ve been singing my whole life,” she explained. “Paul is incredible and it’s been amazing to see what’s happened for him in the past few years. People might come because of his name, but if they stay then it’s because they like the music.”
