It’s official: Oasis icon Liam Gallagher is teaming up with The Stone Roses‘ John Squire, one of the most celebrated guitarists of all time, for a new collaborative project.
It comes after Gallagher teased the idea of a collaborative album with Squire earlier this week by launching a cryptic new video and official website.
The pair will share ‘Just Another Rainbow’, their first single together on January 5, while also teasing “much more music” – heightening the prospect of an album between the pair.
According to an official release, the pair’s first single is tinged with “instantly unforgettable psychedelia”, while also likened to classic Roses hits such as ‘I Am The Resurrrection’ and ‘Love Spreads’.
John Squire said: “To me the most obvious take on ‘Just Another Rainbow’ is that it’s about disappointment, and the sentiment is that you never get what you really want. But I don’t like to explain songs, I think that’s the privilege of the listener, it’s whatever you want it to be. To me, it’s also one of the most uplifting tracks we’ve made together, which is weird.”
The pair have shared a long friendship for many years, but the project first came to fruition when Gallagher recorded a selection of demos at John Squire’s Macclesfield studio, before the pair went off to L.A. to record with Greg Kurstin (Foo Fighters, Adele), who plays bass on the record, and Beck drummer Joey Waronker.
Liam said: “I think John’s a top songwriter. Everyone always bangs on about him as a guitarist, but he’s a top songwriter too, man, no two ways about it as far as I’m concerned. There’s not enough of his music out there, whether it’s with the Roses or himself. It’s good to see him back writing songs and fucking good ones. The melodies are mega and then the guitars are a given. But I think even when you take all the fucking guitars off, you can play the songs all on acoustic and they’ll all still blow your mind.”
The single is now available to pre-order on 7” vinyl and to pre-save HERE.
