Lewis Capaldi has won the Gamechanger Award at the first ever Rolling Stone UK Awards in collaboration with Rémy Martin.
The singer received the award for his work in bringing awareness to the day-to-day reality of Tourette’s Syndrome, both through his powerful set at Glastonbury and his frank discussion of it in the Netflix documentary Lewis Capaldi: How I’m Feeling Now.
In front of thousands of fans on the Pyramid Stage, Lewis Capaldi bravely showed the reality of what it’s like to be overwhelmed by an episode of the neurological condition, which causes a person to make involuntary sounds and movements called tics.
For the way he’s highlighted the reality of the condition and used his global platform to show what it’s like to live with Tourette’s on a daily basis, we can think of no better person than Lewis Capaldi to win the Gamechanger award at the first ever Rolling Stone UK Awards.
Lewis is on currently a career break and was not able to attend the ceremony, but his close friend and Capital FM DJ Roman Kemp accepted the award on Capaldi’s behalf.
He told the crowd at the Roundhouse that he texted Lewis about picking up the award, to which Capaldi replied: “Get to fuck, you do it yourself. Freestyle something.”
Kemp added: “We put [artists] on stage and in front of thousands of people, in front of stadiums, and we expect them to come off stage and to be ok, because they’re getting paid loads of money – who cares?
“But every now and again, someone will come along like Lewis and say, ‘You know what? I’m not ok? There’s a point where I do need to step back, really regroup, see my friends, see my family, and take proper time out’. I implore all artists to do it, and I implore labels to allow their artists to do it, and to not put that much pressure on them. That is why Lewis Capaldi is a gamechanger.”
The first Rolling Stone UK Awards kicked off earlier tonight with a performance from The Last Dinner Party, who stunned attendees with a powerful rendition of ‘My Lady Of Mercy’.
