Fontaines D.C. frontman Grian Chatten has shared ‘The Score’, his first ever solo single.
The track is an atmospheric, brooding effort anchored by Chatten’s distinctive vocals, written during a brief moment of respite while he was on tour with the acclaimed Dublin band.
“‘The Score’ is a heavyweight bated breath of lust. I wrote it in Madrid between an electric fan and a dying plant and I intend to keep it there. It was inspired by sugar and sunset,” said Chatten.
While it’s unclear if a whole solo album from Chatten is in the offing, the last album from Fontaines D.C. came in 2022’s acclaimed Skinty Fia, their third album.
In a five-star review, Rolling Stone UK hailed the album as the group’s best to date.
“It’s on the album’s second half that ‘Skinty Fia’ reaches its brilliant peaks,” our verdict stated.
“Striking highlight ‘The Couple Across The Way’ sees Chatten’s voice set over just an accordion, as he sings of how “the world has changed beyond our doorstep”. The album’s revelation of a title track is the boldest step forward here though, a song on which Chatten develops a more rhythmic, rap-adjacent cadence to his voice over danceable, metallic instrumentation.”
Although a fourth album from Fontaines D.C. might be some time yet, the group will also support Arctic Monkeys on their forthcoming North American tour.
