Fan brought on stage by Dave at Coachella is Richard Curtis’ son
"Spike from London" rapped along to 'Thiago Silva' impeccably at this weekend's California festival
A fan brought out on stage by Dave at Coachella for a rapturous performance of ‘Thiago Silva’ has been revealed to be the son of director Richard Curtis.
During his set at the California festival this weekend, the London rapper brought a fan referenced only as “Spike from London” on stage for his 2016 song – something he has famously done a number of times in the past. At Glastonbury 2019, he memorably brought fan Alex Mann on stage to rap to the song, with the fan going on to be dubbed ‘Alex From Glasto’ and getting his own record deal.
Spike then proceeded to give a brilliant rendition of AJ Tracey‘s verse in ‘Thiago Silva’, leading the performance to go viral online.
It has now been revealed that Spike is the son of Richard Curtis, who has directed classic British films ‘Notting Hill’, Four Weddings and a Funeral’, ‘About Time’ and more.
The connection was made by Spike’s sister Scarlett Curtis, who tweeted a clip of the Coachella performance on Twitter and wrote: That. Is. My. Brother. Spike. At. Coachella WITH DAVE! He’s 18. He has school at 8am tomorrow. He was picked out of the crowd.”
“We have never seen him rap before….” Scarlett added, though it was reported back in 2016 by the Daily Mail that Spike had performed under the name Petit Savage, making his debut album aged just 12.
“One day he’s going to rule the world,” Scarlett wrote on Instagram of her brother at the time.
Last month, Dave shared a self-produced new song called ‘Starlight’ that hears him rap over a hummed rendition of the 1954 classic ‘Fly Me to the Moon’.
The rapper’s first new music of the year follows the release of his second album ‘We’re All Alone In This Together’ in 2021.
Dave has been booked to play this year’s expanded Wireless Festival with other headline sets coming from Tyler, The Creator, Cardi B, A$AP Rocky, SZA, Nicki Minaj and J. Cole.
