Ed Sheeran and Elton John have collaborated on a Christmas single
Sheeran admitted that he didn't feel like the song "suited" him at first
Ed Sheeran and Elton John have worked on a Christmas song together.
The news was revealed by Sheeran during a radio interview in which he admitted that he didn’t feel like the song initially suited him.
“Elton rang me on Christmas Day to say Merry Christmas. Elton rings me almost every single day,” Sheeran began to explain to Dutch radio station NPO Radio 2.
He went on to recall that Elton was excited that his 1973 single, ‘Step Into Christmas’, had finally reached the UK top 10 last year. “[Elton] said, ‘Step Into Christmas is Number 6 in the charts! I want to do another Christmas song – will you do it with me?'” Sheeran said of their conversation.
The singer-songwriter didn’t give much away about the song, saying that it’s “just me and him – it’s great.” There was no mention of when fans can expect to hear the single.
Sheeran also addressed his initial hesitancy about the collaboration. “You don’t know if you’ll still be there tomorrow, everything can change overnight,” he said.
“I may not be here tomorrow. Why shouldn’t I grab this opportunity?”
Meanwhile, John collaborated recently with another musical giant, Stevie Wonder. ‘Finish Line’ appears on ‘The Lockdown Sessions’, John’s new collaborations album due on October 22 that also features guests including Lil Nas X, Miley Cyrus and Dua Lipa.
“I couldn’t be more proud of ‘Finish Line'”, John said of the song in a statement. “I’d go as far as to say it’s one of the best records I’ve ever made.
“Stevie’s voice is as good as I can ever remember hearing him – he sounds like a 17-year-old again, he’s singing with a sheer joy and exuberance in his vocals. Andrew Watt has done an unbelievable job on the production. It was a magical process.”
Last month Sheeran added more dates to his 2022 UK and Ireland stadium tour. The singer’s ‘+ – = ÷ x Tour’ – pronounced ‘The Mathematics Tour’ – was announced earlier in September. It now features extra dates in a number of cities including Manchester, Dublin and Belfast.
