Dua Lipa is reportedly facing a copyright infringement lawsuit by a Florida-based reggae band who claim that she stole her hit song ‘Levitating’ from their own material.
In a lawsuit filed in a Los Angeles Court, Reggae group Artikal Sound System claim that the singer ripped the chart-topping track directly from their 2017 song ‘Live Your Life.’
Billboard reports that the band’s complaint was “very short” and failed to elaborate on exactly how Lipa had stolen the group’s song, but it claimed that the similarities between the two meant it was “highly unlikely” for Lipa’s song to be “created independently”.
It also alleges that Dua Lips had “access” to Artikal Sound System’s song before she created ‘Levitating’, but fails to fully substantiate those claims.
Dua Lipa is currently on the US leg of her ‘Future Nostalgia’ tour, which was frequently postponed as a result of coronavirus.
The UK leg of the tour begins in Manchester next month, with stops at Birmingham, Leeds, Newcastle, Glasgow, Nottingham, Cardiff and Liverpool and London.
Last month saw Lipa launch a newsletter that she says will provide insight and recommendations on style, arts and culture around the world.
Lipa announced the weekly free Service95 newsletter last November.
“I find huge joy in telling people what I’ve learned about in any given city and love finding connection in our shared experiences. Service95 is going to take that idea and bring it to anyone who’s as curious as I am about life,” Lipa explained in a statement about the project.
“The more we share with each other, the closer we become, the wider our circles grow.”
Service95 will be followed by an accompanying podcast, ‘Dua Lipa: At Your Service’, in which the singer will interview “some of the world’s most fascinating, inspiring and influential names across music, literature, entertainment, fashion, activism, politics”.
