Charli XCX says her new album will make people “dance and cry”
But it's a "vibe" too, apparently
Charli XCX has teased that her upcoming album will take an unexpectedly emotional direction.
Speaking to InStyle, Charli explained that the new album is “a vibe” but may make people cry.
She said, “It’s kind of all sex and sexuality. It can make people dance and cry at the same time. It’s a vibe.”
The as-yet-untitled album is a follow-up to her 2020 album ‘How I’m Feeling Now’, and will feature Charli’s recent single ‘Good Ones’, which was released in early September. The album has been heavily influenced by the 80s.
Though Charli has not announced a release date for the album, it is expected for release in March 2022 after she shared a picture of a gravestone with the cryptic death date of March 18, 2022.
Charli recently told Refinery29 that her goal is to make the “ultimate pop music” but warned that her new material will be different to her past songs.
“I’m just very into making ultimate pop music, and the whole album is very contrasting from ‘How I’m Feeling Now’. I’m exploring what it means to be a pop star on a major label in a not very current way. And that’s really fun to me,” Charli explained.
She added: “There are a couple of songs that have stayed as a part of this new project. And to be honest, the meaning of them hasn’t changed. I mean, they were all kind of about sex. And that’s still been quite constant for me throughout the pandemic. With the way that I feel about myself and my sexuality and romance, the pandemic hasn’t changed that too much.”
She also recently debuted a new podcast with the BBC, called Charli XCX’s Best Song Ever, which aired in August. The podcast sees Charli chatting “to friends and celebrity guests from around the world to discover the songs that have been instrumental in shaping their lives.”
Charli XCX is also due to return to the stage in London on October 24 as part of her three-date ‘How I’m Feeling Now’ tour. She’ll play at North London’s Lafayette venue, with gigs also scheduled for Los Angeles and New York.
