Charli XCX’s documentary ‘Alone Together’ is coming to cinemas and Video On Demand in January.
The documentary premiered at the virtual edition of SXSW in March and details the star’s process of making her album ‘How I’m Feeling Now’ in six weeks during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The film is produced by Charli alongside Snoot Entertainment and Dangerous Baby Productions. It’s the feature-length directorial debut from music video directing duo Bradley&Pablo, who are best known for helming the videos for Lil Nas X and Nas’s ‘Rodeo’ and Harry Styles’ ‘Watermelon Sugar’.
‘Alone Together’ will be released in cinemas and Video On Demand on January 28.
A synopsis of the film reads: “With almost a year of editing over 5000 clips from different cameras and formats condensed into 107 minutes, ‘Charli XCX: Alone Together’ is a love letter to her fans who are the co-stars of the movie.”
The documentary grapples with Charli’s anxiety during lockdown and her relationship with boyfriend Huck Kwang, all while she attempts to create an album in less than two months with the help of her fans who she communicated with via live streams on Instagram.
In the film, the ‘1999’ singer admits that she “really needs to be creative to feel comfortable and to make sure my mental health is staying on track”.
She previously told Variety: “It felt only natural to document myself making this album. I don’t think I’ve ever made music in such a unique situation: being so logistically far apart from my collaborators, but going through exactly the same thing, writing songs about my relationship with my boyfriend sitting in the next room, and being so connected to my fans in such an intense and creative way, it felt quite overwhelming and heartwarming all at the same time.”
‘How I’m Feeling Now’ was released on May 15, 2020 and was a critical success, landing a nomination for the Mercury Prize.
The release of ‘Alone Together’ will precede the release of Charli’s fifth studio album, ‘Crash’, which is set to drop on March 18, 2022.
The star has collaborated with artists and producers including Rina Sawayama, Digital Farm Animals, ILYA and George Daniel of The 1975 for the record, which has already produced the singles ‘Good Ones’ and ‘New Shapes’.
The latter is a collaboration with Christine and the Queens and Caroline Polachek.
‘Crash’ will be Charli’s final album to be released under her current contract with Atlantic Records.
