BBC Radio 1 has revealed the longlist for their Sound of 2025 artists, which features a selection of up-and-comers and acts who have already made their mark on this year.
The annual poll lists the acts that the broadcaster tips for success, with previous winners including The Last Dinner Party, HAIM and PinkPantheress.
It is compiled from recommendations from “184 influential music experts, including artists, DJs, radio and TV producers, journalists, streaming experts and festival bookers,” and this year’s features a wide array of acts.
Among the most notable names is Chappell Roan, who arguably feels like something of an outlier given her cultural dominance throughout the year. She is already set to headline Primavera Sound 2025 in Barcelona, while her debut album The Rise & Fall of a Midwest Princess has hit the top spot in the UK album chart.
Her inclusion comes after the Sound Of list dropped a rule that stated an artist would not be eligible if they had scored on a UK Number One or Number Two album by the cut-off point. This rule has now changed so that an artist “cannot have had more than two Top 10 albums in the UK Official Albums Chart” by 30 September 2024 – which means Chappell Roan can be included.
There are also two Mercury Prize winners on the list in the form of English Teacher and Ezra Collective, alongside Irish rappers Kneecap and Aussie dance duo Confidence Man.
