Alicia Keys and J. Cole have collaborated on “two or three” songs
The pair have been writing fluidly in the studio
Alicia Keys has said that she has “two or three” songs written with J. Cole that could be released in the future.
The singer, who releases her new double album ‘Keys’ tomorrow (December 10), revealed in a new interview that it’s “really possible” the songs will see the light of day.
Keys told Complex: “There was a festive studio energy. We were talking….then we just kinda happened to fall on some vibes or some things or some flows. Actually there was like two or three of them. So that was good, and we’ll see what happens.”
The collaborations don’t feature on ‘Keys’ but they might not stay buried forever.
“It’s possible,” Keys said of them being released. “It’s really possible. It’s good too. I liked it, it was easy and it was fluid. I don’t know how [J. Cole] works, because everyone works differently. Some people like to capture the vibe then go later to refine it, some people like to do it all on the spot.”
Her comments follow the release of a YouTube documentary in September about the creation of her new double album, which showed footage of her and Cole working on a song together.
‘Keys’ will feature two versions of each track (the original and the unlocked version). The singer enlisted Mike WiLL Made It to co-produce the unlocked side.
“There’s two sides to every story, and there’s two sides to every song on Keys,” she said in a promotional video. “So, you get to vibe with two sides of me.”
Keys will include the previously shared ‘LALA (Unlocked)’, which features rapper Swae Lee. She performed the song at the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards in September.
The new double-disc album follows the singer-songwriter’s 2020 album ‘Alicia’, which had appearances from Jill Scott, Khalid, Miguel, Sampha, SiR, Snoh Aaelgra, Tierra Whack and more.
Earlier this year Keys shared a 20th anniversary edition of her groundbreaking debut album ‘Songs In A Minor’, which featured a special edition set that contained two previously unreleased bonus tracks from the original album recording sessions, ‘Crazy (Mi Corazon)’ and ‘Foolish Heart’.
‘Keys’ is out tomorrow via RCA Records.
