Mahalia teams up with AJ Tracey on new break-up track ‘Roadside’
It's a sultry R&B break-up anthem from the pair
Mahalia has teamed up with AJ Tracey on new single ‘Roadside’.
The new track is produced by British duo The Elements and sees the pair reflecting on the effects of a painful breakup.
Mahalia addresses the tragic demise of a relationship on the track, while West London star AJ contrasts it against a male perspective of the situation.
“That you left me, left me on the roadside / When you kept me waitin’ on you all night / I never knew you’d be a heartbreaker / I’m done with your fake love,” she sings on the track.
She said of the song: “I’ve kinda been excited about releasing this one since I started writing it. Fresh out of a breakup, I made this one with The Elements and two of my favourite girls and songwriters Abby (Absolutely) and Kamille. We had so much fun writing and making this together.”
“Getting AJ on it was the cherry on top for me. I’ve wanted to work with him forever and I was so happy that it could be on this tune. I hope you love it!” Mahalia continued.
An accompanying music video also sees Mahalia dishing out fast food behind a burger van, as well as a helping of revenge by smashing up a car with a baseball bat, in an ode to Beyonce’s ‘Lemonade’.
The latest release follows the arrival of the track ‘Jealous’ in February, written with Rico Nasty, and ‘Whenever You’re Ready’ in July.
Though ‘Roadside’ is being released as a single, it will also appear on Mahalia’s as-yet-untitled new album, which was written during lockdown.
The album is set to be a follow up to Mahalia’s 2019 album ‘Love and Compromise’, telling Rolling Stone UK earlier this month that the new album’s title is inspired by a Maya Angelou poem.
Mahalia won the awards for Best Female Act and Best R&B/Soul Act in last year’s MOBO Awards, after releasing her ‘Isolation Tapes’ EP. The Leicester-born singer also received her second BRIT nomination in 2020, and a Grammy nomination for ‘All I Need’ by Jacob Collier, featuring TY Dolla $ign.
Mahalia is set to perform at O2 Academy Brixton in London on November 19.
