LCD Soundsystem announce 20th anniversary summer shows in London
James Murphy and co are heading to Brixton
LCD Soundsystem have shared details of a run of four shows in London to mark 20 years since the band’s first ever live shows.
The ‘Platinum Anniversary’ shows are held at London’s O2 Academy Brixton from June 29-July 3. It’s a nod to the band’s debut live shows, which took place at Arthur Baker’s ‘Return To New York’ and Erol Alkan’s ‘Trash’ parties in London in 2002.
The shows will mark LCD Soundsystem‘s first UK gigs in more than four years, as well as their only European headline dates this year. The group’s London run follows their 2021 residency at NYC’s Brooklyn Steele and their recently announced residencies at Boston’s Roadrunner (April 3-6) and Philadelphia’s Franklin Music Hall (March 28-31).
Tickets go on general sale at 10am GMT next Friday (March 11) here. AEG pre-registration is open now from here.
News of the London residency was teased earlier this week with projections around the city. The logo of DFA Records, the label founded and run by LCD mastermind James Murphy, appeared at prominent locations across the English capital, along with the message “you are here”.
The enigmatic projections appeared to be a nod to the electronic outfit’s 2002 breakthrough single, ‘Losing My Edge’, on which Murphy satirically skewers indie rock posers, reeling off a list of momentous moments in music history and repeatedly claiming “I was there”.
Meanwhile, the group returned to ‘Saturday Night Live’ for the first time since 2017 last Saturday (February 26), dusting off two of their oldest tracks for the occasion: ‘Thrills’ and ‘Yr City’s a Sucker’.
They also appeared as a group of Guardian Angels during the ‘Subway Churro’ sketch alongside the evening’s host, John Mulaney.
It marked the second time in three months that LCD have shown off their comedy chops; in December, they released ‘The LCD Soundsystem Holiday Special’, a blend of live performances and skits, with the latter starring the likes of Eric Wareheim and Macaulay Culkin as bandmembers.
