Sam Fender was joined onstage by viral star Francis Bourgeois at Wembley Arena on Saturday (April 2), as the ‘Seventeen Going Under’ tour continues.
In unexpected scenes, the TikTok trainspotter took to the stage on a scooter and performed a tailwhip as Fender played ‘Getting Started’. The sight prompted equal parts amusement and bemusement on social media from those in attendance. “Francis Bourgeois hitting a tailwhip whilst Sam Fender belts out one of his tunes at Wembley wasn’t what I was expecting of tonight, but I loved it,” wrote @IsonCallum on Twitter.
“Sam Fender bringing Francis Bourgeois on stage last night was the last thing I expected to see,” added @mainlyoasis. Footage has since emerged on Bourgeois’ own social media channels of his trip to the north London arena. “I wanted to make sure I arrived early for my friend, @sam_fender ‘s, gig at Wembley!” he captioned an Instagram video in which he can be seen riding his scooter to the venue, before rolling into the empty arena as Fender soundchecks.
Later in the same clip, Fender takes Bourgeois’ trademark GoPro and puts it on his own head; there is also footage of Bourgeois crowd-surfing at the sold-out show. The unlikely team-up comes after the pair met at the NME Awards last month. Bourgeois was on hand to present the award for Best Album in the World to Fender for ‘Seventeen Going Under’.
Bourgeois has also collaborated on videos with the likes of former Arsenal forward Thierry Henry, US pop star Joe Jonas and, most recently, Spanish singer Rosalía, with whom he went trainspotting at King’s Cross Station. Meanwhile, Fender’s latest tour continues apace he celebrates the chart-topping success of ‘Seventeen Going Under’. On the fist night of the tour in Nottingham, he played a hat-trick of previously unaired tracks, ’The Dying Light’, ‘Paradigms’ and ‘The Leveller’.
Fender takes the tour to Newcastle this week for two massive homecoming shows at Metro Radio Arena tomorrow (April 5) and Wednesday (April 6). Later this summer, he’ll play his biggest headliner show to date, at London in Finsbury Park on July 15; Fontaines D.C., Declan McKenna, Goat Girl and Beabadoobee will all join him on the bill.
