The winner of The Album Award, supported by Volvo, at tonight’s Rolling Stone UK Awards 2024 goes to Fontaines D.C. with Romance.

The band’s Carlos O’Connell picked up the award from Rizzle Kicks’ Jordan Stephens at London’s Roundhouse, with O’Connell saying: “What a night. I dunno, I just think there’s only a couple of words to say here.

“It’s kinda weird, it’s the first time it’s been said all night but I’m just gonna say: free Palestine. Free Palestine, free Palestine. F**k Netanyahu and f**k Zionism. Free Palestine.”

Other albums up for the award included Charli XCX’s Brat, Nia ArchivesSilence Is Loud, GhettsOn Purpose, With Purpose and more.

Reviewing Romance upon its release, Rolling Stone UK said: “Fontaines D.C. have abandoned the serious for the fantastical, the tangible for the surreal. This new identity and successful quest for something, ahem, BIG, suits them down to the ground. They’re in a brilliant world, and indeed a league of their own.”

The second annual Rolling Stone UK Awards kicked off earlier tonight with a performance from English Teacher, who delighted with a stunning rendition of ‘You Blister My Paint’ from their Mercury Prize-winning debut album This Could Be Texas. They were followed by performances from JADE and Confidence Man.
