English Teacher win The Breakthrough Award at Rolling Stone UK Awards 2024

The Leeds band capped a huge 2024 and followed a Mercury Prize win with another gong at London’s Roundhouse tonight

English Teacher have capped a fantastic 2024 by winning The Breakthrough Award at the second annual Rolling Stone UK Awards tonight.

The band opened tonight’s show at the Roundhouse in London with a stunning performance of ‘You Blister My Paint’ from their Mercury Prize-winning debut album This Could Be Texas.

Accepting The Breakthrough Award – which saw them beat the likes of Barry Can’t Swim, Fat Dog, Kenya Grace, Rachel Chinouriri and Lava La Rue – from DJ and broadcaster Adele Roberts, singer Lily Fontaine said: “I think music is subjective but what’s good about these awards is you get to thank others. I’d like to thank our team who are sat over there and most of all I’d like to say thank you to Volvo for giving us a free car!”

Reviewing the Leeds band’s debut album upon its release, Rolling Stone UK said: “This Could Be Texas presents an exciting new voice in a saturated scene, one they deserve to graduate from as a band with limitless potential. Across the album, English Teacher sing of home and of being stuck, but the glorious noise they create makes you believe they could go anywhere.”

The second annual Rolling Stone UK Awards kicked off earlier tonight with the performance from English Teacher, and they were followed by performances from JADE and Confidence Man.
