Diana Ross will play Glastonbury’s Sunday afternoon legends slot in 2022.
Over two years after she was first announced for the festival in October 2019, organiser Emily Eavis has confirmed that the R&B icon will make her long-delayed debut on the Pyramid Stage at next June’s edition.
She wrote on Twitter: “Thrilled to be able to let you know that the magnificent Diana Ross is coming to play at Glastonbury next summer”.
The ex-Supremes singer released her first new album in 15 years, ‘Thank You’, last week. Her appearance at the festival will come in the thick of a UK arena tour that takes in Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow, Liverpool, Birmingham, London and Durham.
She wrote on Twitter: “I’m so excited and grateful to finally know that I’ll be seeing you at #Glastonbury while on my UK Thank U Tour celebrating my new album of songs!”
The opening of the Glastonbury gates for its 2022 instalment will bring to an end the longest period without a festival at Worthy Farm since the late 1970s. A planned 50th anniversary edition in 2020, which would have seen Taylor Swift, Kendrick Lamar and Paul McCartney headline, was cancelled in March of that year as COVID-19 took hold around the world.
The 2021 festival, meanwhile, was pulled back in January in the midst of the UK’s third pandemic lockdown, with Eavis and her father Michael saying in a statement, “In spite of our efforts to move heaven and earth, it has become clear that we simply will not be able to make the festival happen this year. We are so sorry to let you all down.” A livestreamed concert from the festival grounds in May, ‘Live from Worthy Farm’, was beset with technical problems.
The likes of Dolly Parton, Burt Bacharach and Lionel Richie have in recent years filled the Sunday afternoon slot on the Pyramid, which typically attracts one of the weekend’s biggest crowds. Billie Eilish has been confirmed as the stage’s Friday night headliner in 2022, making her the youngest solo artist to top the festival’s bill.
