David Bowie’s Hunky Dory to receive deluxe 50th anniversary reissue
Original producer Ken Scott has also shared an "alternative mix" of the album's hit single 'Changes'
A remastered version of David Bowie’s classic album ‘Hunky Dory’ has been announced to mark the record’s 50th anniversary.
Released on this day (December 17) in 1971, the album’s half-century will be celebrated with the release of a special vinyl picture disc. It will arrive via Parlophone on January 7, 2022 – the day before what would have been Bowie’s 75th birthday (January 8).
In addition, to mark today’s anniversary, Ken Scott, who co-produced the album along with Bowie, has shared an “alternative mix” of the album’s hit single ‘Changes’. You can take a listen below.
“The new version of ‘Changes’ is a fresh look at David’s classic,” explained Scott in a statement.
“When listening to the original multi-track I discovered a few things that I had eliminated from the original mix and also a completely different sax solo at the end. It was those things that led me to try a new mix, trying for a slightly harder, more contemporary edge to it.”
The picture disc edition, which you can pre-order here also comes with a printed cut out sleeve and a poster.
January 7 will also see the release of Bowie’s long lost album ‘Toy’, twenty years after Bowie had planned.
It’s being released as part of the forthcoming Era Five boxset, titled ‘Brilliant Adventure’, which is celebrating Bowie’s music between 1992 and 2001.
Yesterday, meanwhile, a rare Bowie demo from 1965 went up for auction. The track, titled ‘I Want Your Love’ was written by John Dee and Jack Tarr and credited to Davey Jones And The Lower Third.
It was recorded by Bowie and his band when he was 18. He did not adopt the surname Bowie until the following the year, to differentiate himself from The Monkees‘ David Jones.
