Chase & Status and Stormzy have won The Song of the Year Award for ‘Backbone’ at the Rolling Stone UK Awards, after the two musical heavyweights teamed up on the smash single this year.
The two acts delivered one of the year’s biggest DnB hits, as well as teaming up to perform it together when Chase & Status headlined Milton Keynes Bowl over the summer.
Accepting the award remotely in a video speech, Stormzy hailed Chase & Status’ legacy after 21 years in music. “I wanted to say a big thank you to Rolling Stone UK for The Song of the Year Award. What an honour with my brothers Chase & Status,” he said.
“I just have to pay homage and dedicate this to them. Will and Saul, my brothers. 21 years in the game, legendary status. This song is a testament to their gift. I will always say it, I went to the studio with two legends and laid down a verse, I made a hook and here we are, they did all the rest. Legendary status.”
He added: “We went all round the world while testing out this song. Different clubs, different environments and we’d come back with a different edit and it took a long to get this song over the line because they were thorough and they were meticulous with their pursuit of greatness for this song. I was just on that vehicle, rolling, and here we are now. So Chase & Status, this one’s for you! Drum and Bass, dun know!”
Picking up the award at the Roundhouse, Chase & Status’ Will Kennard and Saul Milton said: “This means a hell of a lot to us, it never gets old winning these things.”
“Really it’s a testament to UK music, the great music we always have coming from these Isles, I always believe we’ve got the best, most creative, forward thinking music, and long may it continue.”
The duo also thanked their collaborator Stormzy, praising him as a “UK legend”, adding that it was a “real honour for us to work with him”.
The second Rolling Stone UK Awards kicked off earlier tonight with a performance from Leeds band English Teacher, who stunned attendees with a powerful rendition of ‘You Blister My Paint’ taken from their Mercury Prize-winning debut This Could Be Texas. This was followed by JADE’s stunning, stripped back rendition of ‘Angel of My Dreams’.
