Charli XCX has released a trailer for her forthcoming documentary, ‘Alone Together’.
The film follows the singer-songwriter as she writes and records her Mercury Prize-nominated 2020 album, ‘How I’m Feeling Now’, at her Los Angeles home during the first COVID-19 lockdown. You can watch the trailer below.
The clip has XCX wrestling with her inner demons, telling the camera, “I don’t think I’m pretty enough, I don’t think I’m smart enough, I don’t think I’m interesting enough without my work. Without it, I just feel like I’m nothing.” Later, an emotional XCX adds, “I hear this voice, and it says, “you don’t deserve to be good enough.”
The film will be available via video on-demand on January 28th. It’s expected to delve into her relationship both with her long-term partner, Huck Kwong, and with her fans, who contributed to the making of the album; she held Zoom calls with followers from around the globe to share demos and production ideas, as well as to source ideas for videos and artwork.
XCX previously presented a documentary on feminism and gender equality, ‘The F Word and Me’, for BBC Three in 2015. ‘Alone Together’ marks the feature-length directorial debut of seasoned music video directors Bradley&Pablo, who have previously helmed clips for the likes of Harry Styles, Rosalia and Lil Nas X.
The film’s synopsis says: “with almost a year of editing over 5000 clips from different cameras and formats condensed into 107 minutes, Charli XCX: Alone Together is a love letter to her fans, who are the co-stars of the movie.” Early critical reception is already in, with NME calling it “a world away from the headline shows that opened the documentary but…just as euphoric.”
XCX’s fifth studio album, ‘CRASH’, is set for release on March 18th, with a seven-date UK tour to follow in May. Last month, she shared the lead single from it, ‘New Shapes’, a collaboration with Christine and the Queens and Caroline Polachek. XCX will appear as the musical guest on Saturday Night Live this Saturday (December 18).
