Avril Lavigne is making ‘Sk8r Boi’ into a film
Lavigne has grand plans to mark the track's 20th birthday next year
Avril Lavigne has said she plans to adapt her 2002 hit ‘Sk8r Boi’ into a feature film.
Speaking on the podcast She Is The Voice on iHeartRadio, Lavigne discussed the track’s two-decade anniversary which comes in September next year.
“Recently with it being almost the 20th anniversary, a lot of people have been asking me to play this song on TV shows, so it keeps getting brought back up and people will always reference it to me,” she said. “And so, I’m actually going to turn this song into a film and take it to the next level.”
Lavigne went on to discuss the origins of the track. “You know what it was like in high school, you have all the different groups and cliques, and there’s like skaters, preps and jocks,” she said. “It’s kind of like a missed opportunity at love.
The skater boy is in love with the preppy girl and she’s too cool for him but then five years from now she’s feeding the baby and she’s all alone and she wishes she would have followed her heart and not tried to live up to society’s expectations.”
As Metro points out, this isn’t the first time ‘Sk8r Boi’ has been tipped for a big screen adaptation. In 2003, Paramount Pictures hired David Sabel, then a writer on ER, to write a film based on the song’s themes. It’s unclear whether Lavigne’s new planned film is of any relation.
On Halloween, meanwhile, Lavigne played as part of Travis Barker’s ‘House Of Horror’ livestreamed concert. It also saw the first time that Barker’s Blink-182 bandmate Mark Hoppus performed since being declared cancer-free.
