Adele’s fans have reacted online following the release of ’30’, the singer’s first album in six years.
Released at midnight today (November 19), the Londoner’s fourth record is already striking a familiar emotional chord with her followers.
Largely written in response to her divorce from her husband of three years, Simon Konecki, ’30’ arrives almost six years to the day since her last release, ’25’.
Preceded by the soulful ‘Easy on Me’ and featuring such instantly relatable tracks as next single ‘I Drink Wine’, the album has stirred up heavy emotions among Adele fans.
“not adele’s new album making me wanna get a divorce when im not even married”, said one Twitter user of the album, which also delves into the divorce’s effect on Adele’s nine-year-old son, Angelo.
“The vocals in the final third of To Be Loved are a career best. Truly out of this world levels of excellent,” said Harrison Brocklehurst of the record’s penultimate track, which already seems to be among the album’s most powerful.
Another user picked up on the raw emotion of the singer’s vocals on ‘My Little Love’. “NOT HER CRYING ON THIS TRACK?!,! Adele let me give you a hug and a kiss right now,” said @villaneve15.
‘My Little Love’ features a recorded conversation between Adele and Angelo in which she attempts to explain her split from his father to her son. She has previously said that she wrote ’30’ as a document for Angelo of why the divorce occurred, telling Vogue in October that “I wanted to explain why I chose to dismantle his entire life in the pursuit of my own happiness.”
“Hearing Adele cry and speak so openly about her divorce, hearing Angelo and her apologising to him how am I meant to continue it’s track 3 and my little love has ruined me,” said @GeorgiaEH17 on Twitter.
Last weekend, Adele performed in front of Los Angeles’ Griffith Observatory for a CBS special with a star-studded audience that included Drake, Lizzo and Leonardo DiCaprio, and sat down for an extensive interview with Oprah Winfrey.
’30’ has been generally well received by critics. A one-off UK TV special, ‘An Audience with Adele’, airs at 7:25pm on ITV this Sunday (November 21).
