ABBA share “ridiculously happy” new single ‘Just A Notion’
Vocals for ABBA's third comeback single were originally recorded in 1978
ABBA have released their third new track since announcing their return. You can hear the joyous ‘Just A Notion’ below.
The vocals for the song were first recorded in September 1978 during sessions for the band’s sixth album ‘Voulez-Vous’, but the instrumental has been newly updated. The full track follows a snippet shared earlier this week.
In a statement, the band’s Björn Ulvaeus said: “‘Just A Notion’ is a ridiculously happy song and hopefully it will cheer you up in these dark times!”
He continued: “Wikipedia says this track was recorded in September 1978, which sounds about right. That puts it in between ‘ABBA the Album’ and ‘Voulez-Vous’, and it would have been included in the latter had we not decided against it.
“Why did we decide against it? In hindsight, I don’t have a clue. Its a good song with great vocals. I know that we played it to a publisher in France and a couple of other people we trusted and as far as I can remember they liked it very much. So it’s a mystery and will remain a mystery.”
The track will appear on the Swedish pop titans’ new album ‘Voyage’, which is released on November 5, along with the already-released singles ‘Don’t Shut Me Down‘ and ‘I Still Have Faith In You‘.
Announcing their return after a 39-year hiatus, ABBA also shared plans for an innovative concert experience to support it. The group will appear as digital avatars, accompanied by a 10-piece band, at the specially-built ABBA Arena at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London.
In a statement, ABBA said: “It’s been a while since we made music together. Almost 40 years, actually. We took a break in the spring of 1982 and now we’ve decided it’s time to end it. They say it’s foolhardy to wait more than 40 years between albums, so we’ve recorded a follow-up to ‘The Visitors’.”
They added: “To all of you who patiently have followed us in some way or another these past decades: Thank you for waiting – it’s time for a new journey to begin.”
