Benicio del Toro and Mia Threapleton are the centre of a complex father-daughter dynamic in the first trailer for The Phoenician Scheme, Wes Anderson‘s latest movie.
Del Toro stars as Zsa-zsa Korda, a wealthy business magnate who has survived six plane crashes and the father to nine sons and one daughter, a nun called Liesel portrayed by Mia Threapleton.
The trailer proves to be every bit as off-the-wall as you’d expect from an Anderson joint, with the pair joining teacher Bjorn Lund (Michael Cera) on a quest to secure the future of Del Toro’s businesses. There’s a typically stacked ensemble cast that the pair meet along the way including Uncle Nubar – a particularly hirsute character played by Benedict Cumberbatch – and other faces including Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Jeffrey Wright, Riz Ahmed, Scarlett Johansson, Richard Ayoade, Mathieu Amalric, Rupert Friend, Hope Davis and Benedict Cumberbatch.
Anderson co-wrote the crime caper with Roman Coppola and it was shot in Germany. It marks Anderson’s first big screen release since 2023’s Asteroid City and will arrive on May 23, with many expecting a premiere at Cannes.
The Phoenician Scheme will also be Anderson’s third collaboration with Focus Features, the studio which previously distributed his 2012 movie, Moonrise Kingdom, as well as the aforementioned Asteroid City.
