The first trailer has dropped for Greta Gerwig’s anticipated big screen adaptation of Barbie, starring Margot Robbie as the iconic toy doll.
In the first look at the Mattel toy’s live action debut, we see a group of young girls playing with old fashioned dolls, before Robbie’s sleek plastic creation arrives on the scene to cause chaos – with one girl smashing her old toy after becoming enamoured with Barbie.
While the trailer stops short of giving us any solid plot details, we’re also given a brief look at the plastic fantastic world in which the character lives, as well as a sneak peek at a peroxide-haired Ryan Gosling as Barbie’s love interest, Ken.
The plot of the film has been kept mostly under wraps, with an official synopsis simply reading: “Barbie lives in Barbie Land and then a story happens.”
As well as Robbie and Gosling, other A-listers starring in the film include Michael Cera, Will Ferrell, and Shang-Chi star Simu Liu.
Gerwig, meanwhile, recently said she thought that directing the film might be a “career-ender” and became “terrified” of helming the movie.
Speaking on Dua Lipa‘s podcast At Your Service, the Lady Bird writer said: “It was terrifying.“I think that was a big part of it, I think there’s something about starting from that place where it’s like, ‘Well, anything is possible!’ It felt like vertigo starting to write it. Like, where do you even begin? What would be the story?”
Praising how the project eventually turned out, she added: ““That feeling that I had was knowing that it would be really interesting terror. Usually that’s where the best stuff is,” Gerwig explained. “When you’re like, ‘I am terrified of that.’ Anything where you’re like, ‘This could be a career-ender,’ then you’re like, ‘Ok, I probably should do it’.”
Barbie hits UK cinemas on July 21 2023.
