Margot Robbie says she was ‘mortified’ by leaked ‘Barbie’ photos
“I was like, this is the most humiliating moment of my life”
Margot Robbie said she was “mortified” by the leaked photos from the set of Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Barbie film.
Earlier this year, the first-look images of Robbie and co-star Ryan Gosling in Barbie were released. But leaked photos and footage later showed the pair during filming too, in which they sported neon roller skates and matching multi-coloured outfits.
“I can’t tell you how mortified we were, by the way,” Robbie said on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. “We look like we’re like laughing, having fun, but [we’re] dying on the inside… Dying. I was like, this is the most humiliating moment of my life.”
Host Fallon then asked if she expected the response that followed. “No!” she replied. “I mean, I knew that we had some exteriors to shoot in L.A. I knew, OK, once you were doing exteriors, you’re gonna get papped. There’s probably going to be a little crowd of people who are going to stand out, because, you know, we stand out a little bit in those outfits. So I knew there was going to be a little bit of attention, and probably some photos would get out there, but not like it did. It was like mad. It was like hundreds of people watching.”
Speaking to Vogue in August, Margot said Barbie comes “with a lot of baggage”, “a lot of nostalgic connections” and also “a lot of exciting ways to attack it”.
She continued: “People generally hear Barbie and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be’, and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, ‘Oh, well, maybe I don’t…’”
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Gosling was asked about the bright outfits from the Barbie film. “That’s nothing,” he replied.
“I can’t wait for people to see the film,” he added. “That’s all I can say, otherwise Mattel will come in and box me up.”
“That Ken life is even harder than the Gray Man life, I think,” Gosling joked about his recent film co-starring Chris Evans and Ana de Armas. “Ken’s got no money, he’s got no job, he’s got no car, he’s got no house. He’s going through some stuff.”
Barbie is currently slated for UK release on 21 July, 2023.
