In Mexico’s Jalisco region, beneath an ancient volcano, Trending Spirits has mastered the art of ultra-premium tequila production. Its flagship AguaDios Ensamble marries 15-year-aged Blue Weber Agave with rare Japanese Mizunara oak barrels, creating a spirit that challenges traditional tequila-making.
From the mineral-rich volcanic soil that produces agave with record-breaking sugar content to the centuries-old Hokkaido oak used in ageing, each element of AguaDios tells a story of precision, patience, and craft. With only 1,350 bottles released, this tequila is a bold step forward in an industry increasingly focused on authenticity.
The Science of Scarcity: What Makes AguaDios Truly Rare
AguaDios sources its Blue Weber Agave (Agave tequilana) from a family-owned ranchero in Jalisco’s volcanic foothills. While over 300 agave varieties exist in Mexico, only Blue Weber Agave can legally be used to produce tequila. The mineral-rich volcanic soil of this specific location produces agave with the highest sugar content ever recorded in the industry. The plants mature for 15 years—more than twice the industry standard of seven to eight years, allowing them to develop exceptional complexity and concentrated sugars called agavins.
After skilled jimadores harvest the agave by hand, removing the spiky leaves to reveal the heart or “piña,” the tequila undergoes an ageing process in Japanese Mizunara Oak barrels. These rare barrels, sourced from a 200-year-old Hokkaido harvest, are prized for their unique molecular structure and porous nature. The Mizunara oak imparts distinctive notes of sandalwood, coconut, and rich spices that complement the agave’s natural characteristics.
Limited to just 1,350 bottles, each individually numbered and presented in a handcrafted wooden box, the AguaDios Ensamble offers a complex tasting experience. The nose opens with spice and seasoned oak, revealing hints of root beer, toasted cedar, and butter cookies. Grilled pineapple aromas mingle with brown sugar and creamy vanilla, touched by cinnamon. The spirit balances citrus peel and baking spices on the palate with a remarkably smooth, creamy texture. The finish is warm and lingering, with notes of malt, apricot, and coconut that showcase the unique marriage of premium agave and rare Japanese oak.
Riding the Premium Spirits Wave
AguaDios’s launch coincides with growth in the premium spirits market. Industry reports indicate the global premium spirits market, valued at $215.47 billion in 2023, will grow at a CAGR of 9.7% through 2030. The premium tequila segment shows even more promising growth, projected at 12.4% CAGR from 2024 to 2030.
This surge reflects changing consumer preferences, particularly among younger generations prioritising quality over quantity. Today’s spirits enthusiasts seek more than just a drink—they want authenticity, craftsmanship, and a compelling story behind their premium purchases.
At $1,995 per bottle, AguaDios is set to be at the pinnacle of this trend. The price reflects the rarity of the spirit and the meticulous attention to detail in its production. Each bottle contains only three ingredients: organic Blue Weber Agave, mountain-fed spring water, and time, which are proof of the brand’s adherence to purity and traditional craftsmanship.
The tequila’s complex flavour profile caters to the growing segment of consumers who appreciate sipping tequilas rather than mixing them in cocktails. The warm, lingering finish offers notes of malt, apricot, and coconut, showcasing the spirit’s sophistication and the influence of its unique ageing process.
AguaDios advances the evolution of luxury tequila with its combination of traditional Mexican craftsmanship, Japanese oak ageing, and uncompromising quality standards, creating a more premium spirit, representing a new chapter in the history of fine tequila.
