Known as the capital of Costa del Sol, Malaga is one of the most attractive cities in Spain to both tourists and expats. With its perfect blend of heritage, culture, sunny weather, and delicious cuisine, it comes as no surprise that many like to make Malaga their home. However, what are the costs of living in this beautiful city, and how does it compare to simply visiting? Let’s find out.

Living in Malaga as a resident

Housing costs

Although Malaga is one of the more expensive cities in Spain, it is still significantly cheaper than many of the popular cities in Europe. Monthly rent can range depending on the size and location of your flat. For instance, a one-bedroom apartment in a prime city centre location could cost €750 – €1,100 per month, but if you are happy to live in the suburbs, it could be around €600 – €750 per month.

With property prices forecasted to grow significantly in the coming years, Malaga is also a great city to buy a home. The average price as of 2025 is around €3,836 per square metre, as properties range from €150,000 to six-digit numbers. If you are planning to live in Spain long-term, buying a property could be a more financially sound decision.

Monthly utilities and internet expenses

Costs for basic utilities for a 85m² apartment average around €138 monthly, including heating, cooling, electricity, and water. The monthly costs range is anywhere between €81 and €250, however, depending on the time of year. As for the internet, a high-speed connection will set you back €20 – 40, based on your chosen service and provider. Mobile phone plans with data are cheaper, with deals for as little as €8 per month available.

Groceries and dining out

One of the best things about living in Spain is the amazing local produce! And, the grocery costs here are not too steep, particularly if shopping at markets. An average person will spend €200 – 300 per month on groceries. Essential items are relatively affordable here, like bread (€0.99), milk (€1.04 / litre), eggs (€2.45 / dozen), water (€0.70 / 1.5 litre), and tomato (€2.06 / kg).

Dining out expenses will depend on your personal preferences. For example, a budget-friendly tapas bar will offer dishes from €3-5, while a three-course meal at a mid-range restaurant will cost two people €50 for the dinner. Going out for a coffee will cost you under €2, while a domestic beer will be under €3.50.

Public transport and commuting

Public transport is well-established in Malaga, with the availability of buses, metros, and trains, and transport passes are significantly cheaper than in Madrid. For instance, a single journey ticket will cost you around €1.40-1.80, but you may also get a monthly pass for approximately €25.50.

Accommodation options

Malaga is home to a wide range of accommodation options, from budget hostels to high-end resorts, ranging from €30 to €200 per night. The location of your chosen hotel will impact the price as well as the time of year, since summer months tend to be busy with tourism. On the other hand, you do not have to worry about utility costs.

Dining out and local cuisine

Dining out costs are similar, regardless if you are visiting or living in Malaga. However, busy tourist areas and international chain restaurants will always have higher prices than local places. So, two people can share a local tapas for as little as €30 or spoil themselves to a high-end dining experience for €150.

Activities and attractions

Similarly to eating out, activities and attractions can vary depending on your budget and preferences. Some attractions are free or very budget-friendly, like visiting nature reserves, museums, exploring archaeological sites, trying water sports, and so on. But, there are also various premium experiences, like private vineyard tours or spa days.

Transportation costs: Renting a car at Malaga Airport

Public transport is a cheap and convenient way to commute, however, when visiting Malaga, renting a car is often recommended. You can pre-book your car hire Malaga Airport services, to have a vehicle ready right after arrival.

Having a car will give you that extra bit of flexibility and freedom to explore the hidden corners of Malaga, without having to worry about bus schedules or tour itineraries. A car rental with CarGest will cost between €14.79 and €38.27 per day, depending on the chosen model.

Comparing costs: Malaga vs. other Spanish cities

Compared to other major cities, the cost of living in Malaga is considerably cheaper (it is nearly 14% less expensive than Madrid and nearly 17% than Barcelona). While the city has similar infrastructure and great amenities, both accommodation and everyday spendings are priced more competitively.

Of course, compared to some smaller and lesser known towns, Malaga is more expensive. However, the city also offers excellent quality of life, particularly for expats, providing great value for your money. It has lots of cultural and social activities, high-quality healthcare, educational institutions, and a vast selection of jobs. Unlike the northern part of Spain, Malaga sees lots of sunshine throughout the year, which is the cherry on top!

Final word

Malaga is an attractive destination for residents and visitors alike. With so much to offer at reasonable costs, people from all walks of life cannot help but fall in love with this beautiful city.
